Sunday 10th - Eskedar Genene Opening
Eskedar, a self-taught artist and graphic designer born in Ethiopia, found her passion for drawing as a shy child, using art as a way to express herself. Over time, she developed her skills and ventured into painting when she moved to the Netherlands three years ago. Throughout her journey, art became her solace during difficult times, providing her with strength and guidance. Her meaningful and evocative works primarily focus on mental health, bringing awareness to this crucial subject and offering hope and understanding to those who resonate with her art. Eskedar's art not only beautifully reflects her Ethiopian roots and experiences in her new home but also serves as a powerful medium to inspire and uplift others, shedding light on the importance of mental well-being worldwide.

Les Valseuses (1974) (Going Places) Directed by Bertrand Blier
113 minutes
In French with English subtitles
This will be a high-definition screening
This is personally one of my favorite films from French 70s cinema... I think I have seen it about 25 times and I am still looking forward to seeing it again on Thursday!
It has the right kind of subversive black humor that makes it totally unique, and it’s totally unpredictable and stereotyped.
This film is almost 50 years old and it’s still as fresh as when it was made, and there’s certainly enough sting in it to ruffle a few feathers.
The film is an outrageous, surreal, and provocative portrait of two decadent drifters... Jean-Claude (Gerard Depardieu in the role that made him famous overnight) and Pierrot (cult star Patrick Dewaere) who aimlessly travel the French countryside in pursuit of petty theft and women.
Uninterested in a middle-class life, they have decided to go out and live their lives according to their own code of behavior.
They allow real life to determine their fate, not society or governments. But when their abduction of a frigid young beautician (Miou-Miou) becomes frustrating, they find solace in the arms of an ex-convict (the legendary and incandescent Jeanne Moreau). Isabelle Huppert also co-stars in this groundbreaking and controversial debut film from director Bertrand Blier that scandalized audiences worldwide.
I should also mention that the lively soundtrack is by Django Reinhardt’s partner Stéphane Grappelli.
With Jeanne Moreau, Miou-Miou, Gerard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere and a very young Isabelle Huppert. What a cast! And what a wonderful film...

Love Roosien & Marjolein
https://www.marjoleinvanderwal.com/
https://roosienverlaan.nl/portfolio/mugoba-een-ode-aan-het-ongeborene/
Within the installation, there are performative ritual encounters with the audience, exploring various questions. How do you cope with the loss of a dream? How do you navigate the vulnerable process of transformation, when everything feels new on your skin? How do you nurture that which might still be too intimate to speak about?
Mugoba is a temple! A place where contradictions coexist simply. It’s a soft, womb-like space filled with everything and nothing at once. Here, you can engage with the unborn, embark on exploration, potentially bid farewell to dreams, or cherish them with the breath of life.
This art project was developed by Roosien Verlaan. Mugoba is an experiment at the crossroads of art, care, and spirituality. Roosien works with textiles and performance and is also inspired by shamanism. The project originated in response to her stillborn child.
Reserve a ticket by emailing [email protected]: €7.50 per performance. See the program at www.roosienverlaan.nl and check out other goddesses at https://www.marjoleinvanderwal.com/

VOGUE by Mahmoud Vasefi
I have known Vogue magazine since my childhood in Iran. Every day on my way to school, my gaze would involuntarily scan the numerous magazines displayed in the stalls lined up along the main road. Soon my gaze turned into a voluntary focus on Vogue as it beamed brightly amongst the others!
In time I gathered the courage to approach the stalls and I would sheepishly reach for the attractive colourful Vogue. With my eyes, I devoured the images of beautiful ladies dressed in the most fashionable modern designs, with spellbinding jewelry adorning their slim necks, arms, and long fingers, highlighted by exceptionally sexy and unprecedented hairstyles.
With the onset of the Islamic Revolution, censorship began and those elegant, classy magazines were no longer allowed into the country. Owning copies soon became an offense punishable by law. Those dazzling publications were soon replaced by heart-wrenching, blood-curling images of war and bloodshed.
As the years passed, magazines like Vogue remained banned. However, from time to time I’d come across an issue or two, if I was lucky, with friends who came back home on holiday. While life in Iran had changed substantially, Vogue remained as stylish as ever, projecting the image that life was still beautiful.
Having studied art at university, in later years I returned to Vogue as a source of inspiration and gradually, something caught my attention: Gender issues. In time, I decided to paint my very own Vogue covers from memory, reflecting my surroundings and embodying the passage of time, space, gender, nationality, and religion…
My Vogue series is partly a compilation of self-imposed censorship, a series that I painted in my last years still living in my beloved country of Iran in 2011. They reflect my own being, who had been censored until then, much like Vogue, which was not only censored but totally banned, affirming the censorship of sexual minorities in Iran. I’ve tried to remain positive throughout my life and my paintings reflect not only the sheer callousness of reality but also the beauty and humor that surround us.
In life, I’d rather focus on beauty than anger and unseemliness, where love will forever remain untarnished and pure.

SANDRA KLUGE
Sandra Kluge is a Tap Percussionist born in Germany, based in Brooklyn (NY), and performing and teaching internationally.
She writes, records, and performs her own original music, in which Tap is the exclusive percussive instrument, both solo and with a band. Sandra is deconstructing the classic Tap vocabulary in order to be a full band member, rather than just the cherry on top.
Her performance highlights include Thomas Marek's show NOLA, the tap ahead festival, Swiss Tap Days, Düsseldorf Photo Weekend, Symphony Space, LaGuardia PAC, Judson Church, Piano's, The Duke on 42nd St, Basilica Hudson, and many more.
She is the only tap percussionist to be an alumna of the Art Omi Music Fellowship Program and has recently premiered her composition "Anything = Everything", commissioned by the International Contemporary Ensemble.
Sandra Kluge’s solo set joins subtle tap percussion grooves with multidimensional synth realms and spheric vocals. At times meditative, at other times groovy, the loop set is a multifaceted journey through the possibilities of tap percussion. This stems from Sandra Kluge’s longstanding experimental quest to have tap function as a fully-fledged accompanying instrument, offering the foundation for emotionally appealing music.

THE HARDER THEY COME (1972) Directed by Perry Henzell
103 minutes
In Jamaica English with English subtitles This will be a high-definition screening
This is director Peter Henzell’s all-Jamaican 1972 classic, one of the most beloved and longest-running of all cult favorites of all time. It is a gritty, groundbreaking, and truly legendary film that tells the story of Ivan
(Jimmy Cliff), an aspiring young singer-turned-outlaw, at war with everything around him - Jamaica’s music industry, the police, and his rivals in the ganja trade. In the end, this single film packs more gusto and sheer excitement than all of the features Hollywood is cranking out these days combined.
A prime example of ‘outlaw cinema’. It also works wonderfully well as an anthropological exploration of 1970s Kingston - documenting all its squalor, desperation, and desolation. But it is also a riveting movie about poverty, false dreams, ambition, and city life... about police and thieves, and how sometimes they aren’t so different from each other. It’s a ‘slice of life’s drama, and by the way, it is also very un-politically correct on many levels.
I know many would disagree, but personally, I feel we need to keep experiencing things that we don’t agree with, otherwise, we are in danger of falling into dogma. After all, life is a maze and a spectrum, with so many levels and variations and with many working parts, so I feel we can’t apply an easy black-and-white agenda to it.
The soundtrack is one of the most famous in the history of cinema with songs by Jimmy Cliff, The Maytals (Pressure Drop), The Slickers (Johnny Too Bad), and Desmond Dekker.
So I hope you are able to join us at the Brain Salad Cinema as we head South for this rebellious, temperamental, and fierce motion picture!

FORBIDDEN ZONE (1980) Directed by Richard Elfman
74 minutes, high-definition screening in English with English subtitles
This wild unclassifiable ultra-cult film has been called many things... trashy, off-the-wall, bizarre, and freaky. A psychotic Wizard of Oz theme runs through this baffling cinematic cocktail about a mysterious door that leads to
the 6th dimension - a realm of spiritual and musical madness.
This movie is a deranged concoction of a wild group of musicians-performers called Oingo Boingo.
The Oingo Boingo music-art group would update old tunes from old Hollywood B-films and transform them into surreal musical spectacles.
The director’s brother Danny Elfman made the music for this movie, and
he would later end up composing most of the scores for Tim Burton’s films, along with the main theme of The Simpsons.
In the end, it’s a sort of circus freak show, expanded to lunatic proportions, complete with German expressionist set designs and lighting.
It was created by a lot of unknown artists who were starting out,
and would later become legendary... besides the people mentioned above, another example is Matthew Bright, who would go on to direct the free-wheeling thriller Freeway.
This is a cinema of the imagination, stuffed with strange characters, dreamy situations and mind-blowing musical numbers.
Think early David Lynch or John Waters... but actually, this delirious film is in a league of its own.

The fourth drawing class of the Barlaeus Gymnasium will close their school year with the exhibition Heat Your Art Out!
They have recently been working on an upcycling art project: each student has created a new series of artworks with or from a discarded object. So don't expect detailed drawings or finished paintings at this exhibition: this project was all about experimentation.
Mission: try as many different things as possible, fail, don't be afraid and have fun.
And so in the Barlaeus' art classrooms, various items were recently dismantled, pasted, thrown down the stairs and dipped in paint. There was out-of-the-box thought, fiddling and playing. We are very happy to show the results of these artistic investigations to you at What Is Happening Here Gallery.

Emily try-out by Misiconi
In this performance, created by Manouk Schrauwen, five dancers from Misiconi tell the story of Emily. In 1800, Coventry Patmore wrote the poem "The Angel in the House”. His wife Emily, symbolised the ideal wife and woman. Angelic, charming, gracious, sympathetic, self-sacrificing, submissive and pure. An important counterpoint written by Virginia Woolf, "Killing the Angel in the House," is a driving force in this performance. An ode to Emily, an ode to women. Who she could have been if she had lived today. The dancers reflect on oppression but, above all, show their vulnerability, strength and connection.
Emily is produced by Misiconi. Misiconi Company is a Rotterdam-based dance company that shows an alternative reality in which diversity is the greatest asset. With artistically high-quality dance pieces, they perform nationally and internationally with a mixed group of dancers in equal collaboration. Misiconi Company focuses on the artistic collaboration between individuals, paying close attention to how the individual can reach for his or her potential within the collective. The company has a permanent core of dancers who work both on a project basis and structurally. Misiconi is colourful, unique, interdisciplinary and diverse.

At the heart of Amsterdam, we collaborated across communities to show the power of Web3 that lies within co-creation, democratization, diversity & inclusion
We invite you on a journey to explore a parallel reality that already exists but not much understood
"The Audience is Present" takes the idea of “present” as its central theme with the aim of discovering the society we live in.
It was inspired by the concept of the performance "The Artist is Present" by Marina Abramović confronting audiences from rich and diverse backgrounds on various platforms in Amsterdam's city center by taking into consideration social and political challenges in addition to emotional, intellectual, and physical ones.
NFT & blockchain make this connection permanent.
From locking eyes in The 'Artist is Present' to a complete artist/audience merge with a cryptographic lock in royalties and ownership on the blockchain.
The beauty of community lies within the collaborative culture
From art collection to movement
We feel the global state of an unfair world, and we would like to speak up and show a new culture that is accelerated by the adoption of new technologies, Web3.
We are all humans and we have our rights and Web3 opens a new era with its core values of community, co-creation, democratization and inclusivity.
The event goes around “The Audience is Present” art collection that puts the eccentric audience at the center of attention and locks the moment in cryptography and a fair split of ownership.
We were inspired by “The Artist is present” performance by Marina Abramović and her recent NFT collection on Tezos. By entering the technological space, her goal was “to inspire a new generation of heroes to rise up and give a bit of light to a world desperately in need of hope".
We create a historical movement to let new audience experience Web3 space in a non-standard setup that blends the vibe of a performance, meetup, conference and festival. We would like to deliver a feeling of safety and freedom awakening the natural curiosity to enter space and adopt new technologies.

OCTOBER 2022
B-MOVIE: LUST AND SOUND IN WEST BERLIN
2014
Directed by Jörg Hoppe, Heiko Lange and Klaus Maeck
92 minutes
In German and English, with English subtitles
West Berlin in the 1980s was a hotbed of creativity, sex, music and chaos... a special lifestyle had been created by a very unique situation. Anyone who wanted to live without earning money (and also didn't want to join the army), could go to that divided heaven and live freely.
Remember, this is when the infamous Berlin Wall was still in place, and it created an incredible energy that rippled throughout the city. Everyday life hadn't been commercialized yet, and the dark, wild side of life was explored to the max. I know, because I was there.
This is a documentary that throws itself headlong into that era, and collects together images and sounds from Berlin in its heyday. It has been described as a "documentary and a declaration of love rolled into one". I can understand that, because it was an extremely special time and place. In this film we have Blixa Bargeld skinny as a rake getting drunk in a local hangout, and Nick Cave being meditative in his Berlin flat.
The avant-garde band DieTödliche Doris sing in a vast mud-hole called Potsdamer Platz, which today looks like a huge commercial shopping mall. Amid all this chaos is the bewildered and amazed Mancunian musician Mark Reeder who documents it. B-movie captures the young bohemians, the lowlifes, the artists and the decadents who all inter-dependently created
Berlin into a cultural tour de force.
As one critic put it: "Everything was possible, nothing seemed forbidden in this island city in the middle of the GDR. In the last decade before the fall of the wall, West Berlin had become a centre for artists, squatters, subversive ideas, subcultures, drugs, trash, ugliness and passion."
This will be a high-definition projection.

But what is a Happening? An event is something you cannot do on your own, any more than you can be a football team, a choir or a dance floor on your own. This event is perhaps most like making a sand castle together. They are only there for a very short time, you build them and you leave them behind or the sea comes, but that's not the point, it's the moment you build them. Theater collective Nineties is building an unusual theater ritual in a very special place in the middle of Amsterdam. Be welcome and join us!
Nineties is a theater collective that creates incisive contemporary work, playing with elements of visual arts, digital media, literature, music and performance. Nineties is making a youth version of their performance Bring Back The Happening especially for the Krakeling , which was shown earlier this year for an adult audience.
This special experience is played in the What is Happening Here Gallery : Reguliersdwarsstraat 73.

Rockers 1979
Film begins at 21:00
Directed by Theodoros Bafaloukos
In Rasta Patois with English subtitles
99 minutes,
a high-definition screening
Bursting out of Jamaica when the music scene was hottest comes
this flick that explores the culture, social restrictions and music of the
Rasta world.
The livelihood of our main character is dependent on his bicycle,
and when it is stolen he is determined to get it back.
This leads into a confrontation with the local mafia, and a journey
that many have referred to as a Robin Hood saga set in Trenchtown.
It is more humorous and feelgood than many other films coming out of
Jamaica, and it is also more ‘professional’ and colorful... making it
easily the most popular of all the movies that dealt with this subculture.
It is a glowing work that radiates with a very special energy.
Besides the story line, what we have here is a film that documents
the class struggle in Kingston and the ganja-fueled existence of people
who lived in the urban shantytowns.
It is about fighting for a sense of community while the same time
recording the flourishing music scene.
The soundtrack is absolutely legendary, gathering together some of the most crucial musicians to
ever hit vinyl, many of these musicians have minor roles as actors as
well: Peter Tosh, Tobbie Shakespeare, Burning Spear,
Gregory Isaacs, Inner Circle.
Le Monde: "Rockers is not a film, it is a work of art."

FUEGO 1969
Directed by Armando Bo
84 minutes
In Spanish with English subtitles
Fuego means ‘Fire’ and actress Isabel Sarli is burning up!
Agentina’s greatest female sex symbol stars as Laura,
a nymphomaniac who may very well be sexually insane.
The more she attempts to break free from her desire, the more she is
sucked deeper into the jaws of passion. Or on the other hand, maybe
she ins’t mad, but is simply living in a straight, uptight, conservative
society.
Despite the constant attention of her husband, Laura just can’t be
satisfied, she is at the mercy of her insatiable sexual desires.
Though she makes it with always every man in sight, what really pushes
her husband over the hedge is Laura’s affair with their lesbian
housekeeper Andrea.
Lots of crazy scenarios detonate, along with some heavy overblown
emotional dramas, driving this Argentine flick into
a state of delirium bordering on surrealism.
Isabel Sarli, Miss Argentina from 1955, gives a fiery performance
of longing and unquenchable desire. See her uncontrollable passion
ruin her marriage with the man she truly loves!
Directed by Armando Bo (Sarli’s husband), who some have called the
Russ Meyer of Argentina. This flick has been discribes as the ‘Rosetta
Stone’ of Argentinian sexplotation melodrama, and is
a long-time favorite of cult filmmaker John Waters.
As one crisis was forced to admit ‘Isabel Sarli squeezes more sexual
frisson into the space between breathing in and breathing out than
most of us could spread over a lifetime
of ordinary love-making’.
This will be a high-definition screening.

COFFY 1973
Coffy, la panthere noire de Harlem
Directed by Jack Hill
91 minutes
In English
"She had a body men would die for - and a lot of them did!"
Coffy (Pam Grier in her career-defining role) is an emergency room nurse by day and
vigilante by night, targeting the dealers who made her sister a comatose junkie. She works her way up to the Italian mobsters muscling into the ghetto drug trade while she's being romanced by a glib, smooth-talking politician and wooed by nice-guy cop William Elliot, whose refusal to sell out to the corrupt whity police force earns him a crippling beating.
There's plenty of sex, a female cat-fight that leaves the losers topless, car chases and
shootouts galore, but what makes Coffy a blaxploitation classic is Grier's Amazonian
presence and fiery charisma, and the gritty, low-budget action scenes marked by visceral, wincing violence... all backed up by a classic funk soundtrack.
"She's the ultimate tough and sexy heroine. She's Soul superstar Pam Grier, and whether delivering her justice with a shotgun, a razor or just her bare hands, she doesn't miss a beat in this "smashing, no-holds-barred tale of retaliation"
- Variety
"Coffy couldn't be better! It's one of the most entertaining movies ever made."
- Quentin Tarantino
This will be a high-definition screening.
